Sakaki, Yuri (Brother)
PERSONALITY:
Yuya is a very energetic and theatrical boy who loves to spend his time entertaining people, which he likes to get through with his entertainment dueling just like his father, Yushou Sakaki, who he is very heavily inspired by, though he also enjoys other types and aspects of entertainment.
He's quite a creative person and beyond dueling, he also enjoys organizing fun events, has a talent for decoration, enjoys putting together and wearing costumes and is also rather decent at singing and dancing. He is also quite good at acrobatics, which is needed a lot with action dueling. He can do backflips and swing on things easily and with amazing accuracy.
Though behind this fun-loving duelist, is the mask of a clown. Yuya finds it very difficult to express his deeper emotions to others, and will often cover up that he's upset, by either forcing a laugh and joking around or he'll choose to cover his eyes with his goggles, which is a coping device he's had since he was a child. In the past, especially after his father disappeared, he had a habit of mocking his dad and himself, before other people could. He chooses not to cry in front of people, and a lot of the time, when he feels he can't laugh his feelings away, he'll instead, go rather numb and quiet. Though, in bad times, he will often try to laugh, after remembering his father's advice to laugh when he feels sad in order to move forward, but it was advice that he probably took to heart too much.
He can be quite sensitive and can be easily prone to bouts of low-confidence, especially when he feels cornered in a duel.
Other than this, Yuya is also a bit of a jokester and so he will sometimes come off as a little clown-ish and like he might not be taking things seriously, but he does take things seriously when he needs to. He has good knowledge behind his chosen dueling style and is good at using the monsters and field to his advantage. When he gains confidence in a duel, that is when he will begin imitating his father's entertainment dueling style and concentrates on entertaining the audience.
Yuya believes that dueling shouldn't be used to hurt someone, but instead should be used to make people smile!
HISTORY:
Yuya Sakaki is the only child to Yoko Sakaki and Yushou Sakaki and he comes from Maiami City, which is located rather far away from Domino City.
Yuya's father, Yushou, is known as the man who pioneered action dueling to what it is today. His desire to entertain the crowds watching his pro-dueling made him make full use of being able to interact with his monsters and the field around him. Although it was seen as rather silly at first, people soon found his way of dueling to be very exciting.
As Action Dueling became more popular, Yushou, along with his long-time friend Shuzou Hiragi, opened up the You Show Duel School, a school that taught Entertainment Dueling. At the time, Yuya and his childhood friend (And Shuzou's daughter), Yuzu, were 10-years-old and were the school's first students.
Yuya looked up to and admired his father's dueling style a lot and wished to become an entertainment duelist like his father.
Three years later, when Yuya was aged 13, his father was due to go up against Strong Ishijima, an incredibly strong pro-duelist, but Yushou mysteriously never turned up for the match. The crowd was quick to judge Yushou, branding him a runaway and coward who was afraid to lose the match. Afterwards, Yuya was taunted relentlessly over his father's disappearance. Other children would call him "the son of a coward" and people constantly talked about him and his dad behind his back. Upset by this, as well as his father's disappearance, Yuya went into a shell and masked the sadness the only way he knew how to. He began making jokes and laughing about the situation with his dad, before other people could.
A few months later, Yuya was approached by Strong Ishijima's manager who wished to propose a duel between him and Yuya. A publicity match where Yuya would duel Stong Ishijima in his father's place. Although hesitant at first, Yuya accepted, hoping to be able to redeem his father's name and show his father's entertainment dueling to the crowd! In reality, the match-up had been set-up in the hopes that it would lure Yushou out of hiding.
Although Yuya dueled well, Strong Ishijima was able to easily push him into a tight spot. Yuya, who was quickly losing his confidence, remembered his father's advice that if he let himself be paralysed by fear, he would never step forward. At this point, the pendulum pendant around Yuya's neck began glowing and transformed a bunch of cards in Yuya's deck into Pendulum Cards, including his Odd-Eyes Dragon being changed into Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon! With this change, Yuya was able to flawlessly preform a Pendulum Summon, a summoning method that no-one had ever seen before, and with this, he was able to win the match.
After this, everyone was eager to know more about Pendulum Summoning, but there was only one problem; Yuya didn't have any memory of preforming the summoning method!
In order to try and understand what he did in the duel, he attempted to watch a recording of the duel itself.
The next day, a bunch of potential new students arrived at You Show Duel School, which was now headed by Shuzou, as they were interested in Pendulum Summoning. In order to demonstrate it, Yuya and Yuzu dueled, but when Yuya tried to Pendulum Summon, his duel disk threw up an error. Thinking that it may only work when he's in a pinch, he told Yuzu to attack him and Yuzu proceeded to kick his ass. Badly.
After the duel, he showed his Pendulum Cards to everyone, which looked different to any other card in the game. This prompted the crowd at You Show to assume he cheated against Strong Ishijima and that he somehow made his duel disk be able to accept the cards, so they leave, feeling unimpressed. Yuya, who was disheartened by this reaction, lowered his goggles and was about to walk out when his remaining friends told him that they still believed in him and his ability to Pendulum Summon, which convinced him to not give up and to master the summoning technique.
He spent all that night dueling Yuzu and his other best friend, Gongenzaka, in order to understand how pendulum summoning works and he managed it!
Sure, it took 271 tries, but he managed it!
Now he was able to wield this summoning style that was special and all his to use!!
Then a few months later, I2 began releasing Pendulum Cards.
Yuya was devastated. He originally believed that the power to Pendulum Summon was a special thing only he could do, but now everyone had access to Pendulum cards and were able to Pendulum Summon too. They were no longer special to him.
But on the up-side, around this time was when Yuya received an invitation from Headmaster Samejima of Duel Academy. Although I2 had begun bringing out their own Pendulum Cards, Yuya was still recognized as the pioneer of the new technique. Impressed by Yuya's discovery of this new summoning method, as well as being the son of the pioneer of action dueling, which was still seldom used outside of Maiami City, Samejima decided to extend an invitation to Duel Academy to this promising youngster. He could by-pass the tests to get in, but would have to start in the lowest dorm, Osiris Red.
Yuya was hesitant at first. Going to Duel Academy would mean leaving behind his friends and family, as well as You Show Duel School, which had been struggling for students ever since his father's disappearance. He also didn't feel comfortable getting a free pass into a major dueling school.
After discussing it with his mother, friends and Shuzou, it was decided that it would be a good idea for him to attend Duel Academy. Not only would he learn a lot, but he could also help to further the use of Action Dueling outside of Maiami City and also spread the word of Entertainment Dueling and You Show Duel School. With that, Yuya agreed to attend the Academy and agreed to skip the written exam, but insisted he at least take the dueling exam in order to show his ability.
Curious about seeing Pendulum Summoning with his own eyes, Samejima agreed and arranged for Yuya to duel Vice-Principal Chronos.
To cut a long story short, Chronos got his ass beat by Pendulums and Yuya got a spot at Duel Academy in the Osiris Red Dorm.
Samejima decided that Yuya could move into his dorm room a month early if he wished to, in order to get used to the island, as well as Domino City, and also to sit in on a few classes. At this time, Yuzu also wished to join Yuya at Duel Academy, so after saying goodbye to their family and friends (and with Yuya making a promise with Gongenzaka that the next time they met, they'd duel to show how much more stronger he was) Yuzu and Yuya left for Domino City.
Yuya was able to go to the island straight away, but Yuzu had to stay in a hotel in Domino City to await her last minute exams to get into the school.
On the island, Yuya found that he was being roomed with an older boy named Yuma Tsukumo. The two boys thankfully hit it off straight away and quickly became friends, something which was strengthened when they both found out that the other knew the pain of having a missing parent.
- Desperado Plot -| Gaining the Fusion Dragons
At the beginning of Yuya's first year at the Academy, he and Yuma found themselves being targeted by other duelists who were trying to break their dueling spirits and drive them away from the academy. Yuya was targeted first by a girl calling herself "Princess Teddirina" who threatened to out Yuya as a cheater who made up his pendulum cards. Yuya turned up to the specified location with Yuma, but in an effort to stand up for his friend, it was Yuma who dueled Teddirina and won. This was Yuya's first time seeing XYZ Summoning first-hand.
Sometime after this, in early November, Yuya was sent a message from a boy named Hayate, who wanted to challenge him to an action duel on a specific date. This date just so happened to be the one year anniversary of his father's disappearance, but Yuya decided to take on the challenge in an effort to distract himself from the day and felt that the best way to honor his dad that day would be to show off his entertainment style in an Action Duel.
During the duel though, Hayate revealed the details to the school about Yushou, outing Yuya's dad as the coward who ran away from a pro-match. In addition to this, Hayate also used the pendulum deck 'Yonsenju', against Yuya, which he had only been running for three days. He almost beat Yuya with it, but despite what was being thrown at him and thanks to the encouragement of his friends, he was able to beat Hayate. But after this, there was a silence in the arena with the crowd not knowing what to think about Yuya anymore. Getting jeers from the people in the audience, Yuya left the area quietly and disappeared.
Yuma and Yuzu, worried about Yuya, spent the rest of the evening searching for him.
Yuya was missing until late that night, when he was found and talked to by one of his other new friends at the Academy, Hitoshi. Afterwards, Yuya reunited with Yuzu and talked with her before returning to Osiris Red.
During this time, Yuya, who had ran a little Halloween Party at Osiris Red before those events, was looking to run a bigger, more planned event for Christmas. After discussing the possibility of a Christmas Party with Principal Samejima, Yuya was given the title of 'Student Event Organizer', a title that had been held by Juudai years before. Taking his new role seriously, Yuya began planning for the Christmas party, which he held just before Winter Break.
During Winter break, he learned of Yuma and Kotori being lured into a 'Dark Game' which very much almost killed them both, this was the first time Yuya had heard about Dark Games and was understandably uncomfortable with the idea of a type of dueling which harms another person. This was also when he learned about Desperado and their prophecy through what Yuma had learned about it.
In early January, Yuya came down with a bad flu virus. Seeing it as an opportunity, Hayate, who worked for Desperado, sent another member, Aisu, to lure Yuya out of his dorm room while his friends were in their classes, tricking him into thinking that Yuma and Yuzu were in trouble. Sadly, Yuya fell for the trick and was lead right into a trap. A sports cage was put up quickly around Yuya and another duelist named Daisuke, who had been chosen to duel against Yuya, though once he learned Yuya was sick, he tried to refused, but a masked Hayate blackmailed Daisuke, telling him that if he didn't, he'd be reported for having a jailbroken duel disk with the safeties turned off. Yuya and Daisuke had no choice but to duel.
Yuya managed to struggle through, but the duel was taking a toll on his sick body, worsening his fever. At one point, Yuya was unable to get himself up off the floor, but that was when Rune-Eyes Pendulum Dragon called to him. This gave him one last ounce of strength to get up and summon the dragon, using Entermate Trump Witch and he was able to defeat Daisuke, but he collapsed soon after the win with a dangerously high fever.
Thanks to Daisuke, Yuma and Yuzu, Yuya was taken to the infirmary where he was hooked up to an IV for fluids and medication. He remained unconscious, but visibly uncomfortable for two days as his body struggled to fight against the virus, but by the third day, his body finally began responding to the medication and his fever went down to a more acceptable level, allowing him to rest better and to finally regain conciousness.
He had to stay in the infirmary until that weekend so that he could regain some strength before being released, but had to have another week off from classes after that.
During this, Yuma, using information he and Yuzu got from Daisuke, confronted Jouji, the person who had been jailbreaking duel disks for Desperado. Jouji agreed to tell him some information if he won a duel against him and although Yuma lost, he was able to find out that Hayate was indeed part of Desperado... if not the leader.
They also found out that Desperado had bugged their Duel Disks and Dorm Room, but thankfully these were removed, due to the efforts of Akuma, Euphie and their mother, Noriko.
In late February, Yuma, Yuzu and Yuya finally decided to confront Hayate at the main arena late at night. Yuzu was the one to duel against Hayate, showing off the fusion summoning she had learned in order to help protect Yuma and Yuya and she eventually won, as well as being able to gain Bloom Diva from Hayate, who got it, knowing Yuzu was looking for it. After this, Hibiki revealed himself as the true leader of Desperado. He, Yuma and Yuya were going to have a harmless normal duel to sort out their differences, but Hayate managed to activate a dark game, which reacted to the Action Field and made the field overtake the school.
During the duel, Hibiki, Yuma and Yuya attempted to get to the power core of the school in order to try and shut it down to stop the duel, but when they got there, Hibiki was taken over by a demon, a rival to the demon Beelze that Yuma defeated during the winter holidays. Working together, Yuma and Yuya were able to defeat Hibiki and free him from the grip of the demon.
Once the duel ended, they were confronted by Noriko and the island security. It was revealed that their duel had caused the evacuation of the island and all of them were arrested by the island security for that and for dueling after-hours which is not allowed. Noriko fought for their case, but in the end, it was decided that Yuma, Yuzu and Yuya would be put through the expulsion duel process, where they would be pitted against strong duelists. If they lost, they would be expelled. The only way to stay was to win.
The three friends were understandably upset. Yuya became quiet for the days afterwards and refused to talk about the issue with Yuma, despite his friends attempts to try and talk to him. He suffered with nightmares, plagued by the thought that expulsion from Duel Academy would ruin his chances of becoming a pro-duelist, like his dad, as well as soiling the entertainment style of dueling that his dad created and thus possibly effecting You Show Duel School. These were the same worries that Yuzu also carried on her back.
After talking with Sadame and Desdemona, and reuniting with Yuma and Yuzu, the three friends agreed that they would help each other to get through this challenge, along with Desdemona's help, who trained them the best they could to be ready for their duels.
Out of the three of them, Yuya was the one who got the most strongest duelist. The academy had received a high-level request from Reiji Akaba, who wished to duel Yuya for his expulsion duel. Through this duel, Reiji attempted to give Yuya advice on his dueling, but also revealed that he had a hand in creating Pendulum Cards, in conjunction with I2, for wider use. Although Yuya dueled the best he could, even bringing out a new fusion dragon, Beast-Eyes Pendulum Dragon, Reiji overpowered Yuya and almost won, but at the last moment, he forfeited the game, saying he had something important to attend to and gave a recommendation that Yuya should stay at Duel Academy.
Yuya celebrated his and his friends victories with their friends and family, but Yuya was shaken by his duel with Reiji and how easily he was overpowered by him, but he swore to himself that he'd become stronger in order to one day overcome Reiji as an obstacle.
- Naturia Forest -
In late April, Cairngorgon, Antiluminescent Knight had been hunted down for weeks by Juudai and Desdemona, as he wanted to open up a gateway to somewhere which would take a number of blocks to the city with him. After another confrontation, Cairngorgon fled, but ended up going to Duel Academy Island, where he got into a tussle with a mysterious stranger. The fight spilled onto Osiris Red, causing damage to the male dorm building and alerting a bunch of people, including Yuya, to what was going on. During the attack, Yuya found out that the mysterious stranger that had been fighting Cairngorgon was none other than his friend Gongenzaka.
Cairngorgon lured Yuya and the others into helping him open a gateway, which swallowed them all up.
When they all regained conciousness, the group found themselves in Naturia Forest. They came across Cairngorgon again, who attacked them, aiming to finish them off, but were saved by one of the hunters of the forest, which challenged Cairngorgon. Yuya was amazed by the duel, which resembled an action duel so much, but found that the hunter was picking up cards during the duel which he never saw before.
Another hunter showed up, being revealed as Isabel Marias who took them back to their home where they were allowed to stay until a solution to get them home was found. During their stay, Yuya found out more about Action Cards from Isabel, that they were pieces of duel energy that transformed into a card when it responded to the will of a duelist. It was their secret weapon in protecting the forest from invaders.
Eventually, the group were given the task to pass a test that new hunters go through in order to be able to get home. In this test, Yuya, along with Yuma and Gongenzaka, dueled the Earthen Keeper, where Yuya was able to use Action Cards for the first time. When the group won against the Earthen Keeper, they were all given the title of Hunters and were presented with a pearl-like jewel and a card which would allow them to use the gates to travel dimensions with the Earthen Keeper's permission. Using the card, they were all able to return home.
The idea of Action Cards would not leave Yuya's head though, and after talking with Hitoshi at the tea party, Yuya realized he may be able to include Action Cards into Action Dueling in their world, but would probably need the help of Leo Corporation in order to code such a thing into the system.
- Barian Arc -
A few weeks after Yuya had submitted his idea for adding Action Cards into Action Dueling, he was called out of one of his classes to the Principal's office. Once there, he found Reiji Akaba waiting for him. Reiji enquired to Yuya as to where he got the idea of Action Cards from and was able to get him to talk about his experience of Naturia Forest, including how they got there and back. Once hearing of the method of how they got back, via a card that allowed them to use the Earthen Keeper gates, Reiji asked Yuya if he could borrow the card as he was interested in researching into both cards from other dimensions, compared to cards from Earth. Yuya, trusting Reiji, gave him the card.
Reiji told Yuya that he would implement Action Cards at the Academy, as well as select LDS locations as a trial.
When Alexandra targeted Yuma in order to get Hope, Yuya, Yuzu and Gongenzaka interrupted, right when Yuma was about to lose. While Gongenzaka got Yuma to a safe place, Yuya and Yuzu took on Alexandra together. During the duel, Yuya's strong bond with Yuzu resulted in the creation of Odd-Eyes Vortex Dragon, a new fusion monster. Despite this giving them an upper hand, both were defeated in the duel when Alexandra was able to use Yuya's pendulum summoning as a basis for creating her own Pendulum cards, which she used to Pendulum summon three Galaxy Eyes Photon Dragons. As a result of their loss, both Yuya and Yuzu were drained of their life energy, leaving them unconscious.
Yuya and Yuzu eventually regained conciousness, but were both too weak to move much. Due to this they were bedridden for a month in the infirmary before Yuma's match with both Numeral Hunters resulted in their life energy being returned to them.
Then the first thing they both did was eat a ton of pancakes.
And then realize that they had a month's worth of work to catch up on right before finals! How fun.
Thankfully both Yuya and Yuzu worked incredibly hard at catching up, as well as getting ready for their finals and Yuya managed to pass with a recommendation to move up to Ra Yellow! But because he liked being room-mates with Yuma, both he and Yuma decided not to move up and stay in Osiris Red. Yuya figured that he may move up in his last year if Yuzu and Gongenzaka do.
During the Numbers Club adventures to collect the Legendary Numbers, Yuya and Gongenzaka took on the Barians, Achilles and Aegis. During the duel, Yuya's bond with Gongenzaka resulted in him summoning Odd-Eyes Meteor Dragon, a Synchro based evolution for Odd-Eyes. They won the duel and Yuya gained possession of Number 64.
When Yuma dueled Caduceus and he was taken over by a backlash of chaotic energy from his unstable rank-up card, resulting in Dark Zexal, Yuya dueled his friend and refused to give up in an attempt to try and snap Yuma out of it. Yuya's strong bond with Yuma resulted in Yuya summoning yet another new dragon, the XYZ based Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon. With this, Yuya was able to dispel the chaotic energy around Yuma and return him to normal, but the duel resulted in them both being exhausted and injured, making both boys pass out.
While recovering in the infirmary, Shirou, who had been with the two boys at the time, told Yuya about how he had sensed the Barian's aura's at the time and how he had sensed it before at the academy and how he had also sensed it from Alex.
Yuya asked Alex about it and through this learned how she had absorbed Scythe's power.
Later on, after he and Yuma had recovered, Yuya talked to Yuma about Shirou sensing something similar to the Barian's aura at the Academy and that his suspicions were that Koyo and Kai were related to that, due to their reactions on their Legendary Number missions.
Yuya accompanied Yuya and the rest of the Numbers Club to the Barian World, as well as their unexpected pit-stop to the Astral World. At the Barian World, Yuya was unable to accompany Yuma due to the nature of the area, so he instead helped to protect the airship along with Yuzu, Gonegnzaka and Kotori.
Due to the events at the Barian World, Yuya no longer had Number 64.
Afterwards, when Alex activated her Dark Signer powers via a demon she'd accepted power from, she aimed to get revenge on the Astrals for everything they did and planned to take Yuma's airship to get there. Yuma gave Yuya the key to the airship, as well as Hope and told him to hide. Yuya decided to hide up on the Academy's rooftop, but was found by Alex.
Yuya dueled Alex, using his Entertainment Dueling to try and reach out to her, but he eventually lost the duel and Alex was able to knock Yuya unconscious and take the airship key. This was when Juudai appeared and the two agreed on a duel, but before following Alex, he saw to Yuya, who gave him Hope before he left.
In the middle of Alex and Juudai's duel, Yuya and Yuma intervened in order to try and stop them dueling so violently. Juudai listened and decided to stop using his Supreme King powers and refused to fight Alex any longer.
- ARC- V Plot -
During September, the World Action Duel Championship was held which Yuya got an invite to, but due to it being the month for his finals at Duel Academy, Yuya declined the invitation.
ABILITIES:
At current, his abilities are not 100% known, but it is obvious he is connected very heavily with Pendulum Summoning, and has shown that he has been able to create cards out of nowhere that are Pendulum based. It seems connected to his pendant, but it's true powers are unknown.
He has shown he seems to have the ability to create cards from the strong bonds he shares with others.
