[Story] A Tale of Two Protags (Part 1)
Synopsis: Yuya meets Yuma for the first time after arriving on the island. (Random trivia: Yuma, and now Yuya, actually stay in the exact same dorm room at Osiris Red that Juudai had.)
"Well, this is the place."
Yuya stood outside the male Osiris Red Dorms on Duel Academy Island, after arriving into the port on the monorail that connected the island with Domino City. Thankfully the dorm was the closest to the islands port, but looking between it and the main building of the academy, that he could only just see over the trees, it seemed like it was quite a walk to get there for classes. Shrugging his shoulders, he began heading towards the dorms. He was eager to see the place he was staying in and to meet his room-mate.
As he climbed the stairs, he observed the doors on the top half of the building. He was sure the e-mail he had received beforehand said he was in the first dorm room on the top. Once he had gotten to the door, he took a deep breath and smiled. This was the beginning of a whole new journey for him and for action dueling. He put his hand on the door handle and turned to open it, the door was unlocked and opened straight away.
Walking in, the first thing that hit him was all the items that were laying around the small room. A treasure chest, a small totem pole, some carved wooden figures, some creepy looking masks... what was all this stuff? Yuya began to wonder if he got the right room and this was actually a storage closet or something. There was even a hammock that was attached between the top of the bunk bed and the wall, stretching across the window at the back of the room.
Confused, Yuya stepped in the room a bit more to get a better look.
All of a sudden, something jumped out at him from behind the treasure chest. There was a loud bang, some smoke and... streamers falling onto Yuya's very surprised face.
"WELCOME!!"
Yuya was too surprised to move at first while he processed what just happened, but it became apparent that Yuma was the one that jumped out and he had pulled a party popper in order to welcome him to the dorm. Once he had regained his composure, Yuya slowly pulled the streamers off his face and looked at them. He gradually smiled and chuckled a little.
"That was some welcome! Tsukumo, Yuma, I'm guessing?"
Yuma grinned and pointed to himself confidently. "The one and only!! Sakaki Yuya, right?? Nice to meet 'cha!"
Yuma held out his hand in offer of a handshake. Yuya grinned and took his offer, shaking Yuma's hand. "Likewise!"
"So, this is the dorm, then? It's er..."
Yuya wasn't quite sure how to describe it. Cosy? Quaint? Tastefrent?
If he was to be honest though, he'd say small, cluttered and drafty.
"Yeah, I know! It's not much!" Yuma exclaimed happily. "but it's actually quite comfy once you get used to it!"
Yuya looked over at the bunk beds. The bottom and middle beds were taken up with more old junk, it seemed like there was only one bed free, the top bunk.
"So, er... where am I sleeping?"
Yuma pointed to the top bunk. "Just take the top bunk!"
"Then... where do you sleep?"
Yuma grinned and quickly jumped into the hammock, laying down in it. "I sleep here! So it's okay for you to take the top bunk!"
"Isn't that uncomfortable?"
"Nah! It's the perfect place for me to sleep!"
Yuya wasn't going to argue with that. After all, he was getting the actual bed. With that, he threw the bag he had with him up onto the top bunk. After doing that, he decided to take another look around the small room.
There was a desk opposite the bunk beds which was obviously to be used to do studying on. Thankfully Yuma only had a few items on one side of the desk and had left the rest free. Opposite the bottom of the bunk beds was a small kitchen area. A sink with a few mugs and a kettle for hot drinks. He turned around to the wall the bunk beds were next to and came face-to-face with a tribal mask that was hung up. Yuya curiously took the mask off the wall to take a closer look at it.
"So, what is all this stuff you have in here, anyway?" He turned to face Yuma, putting the mask up to his face. "It's not really stuff you'd usually have in a dorm room."
Yuma sat up in the hammock with excitement. "It's my parents stuff!"
Yuya removed the mask slightly from his face, looking puzzled. "Your parents stuff?"
"Yeah! They're explorers! They go around visiting old, ancient places all over the world and they often bring stuff like this back with them!"
"Whoa." Yuya looked back down at the mask he hand in his hands. So this stuff wasn't just any old junk but ancient artefacts from all over the world. Yuya carefully placed the mask back on the wall so not to risk damaging it and walked back over to the desk. Upon doing so, he spotted that there was a framed picture of a man and woman stood together. Picking it up, he also noticed the man was holding a golden pendent which was now hanging around Yuya's neck, similar to how he wore his own pendulum pendent.
"Are these your parents?"
Yuma beamed with pride and nodded in response. "Yep that's them!"
"I guess that pendent was an artefact they found too." Yuya motioned towards the emperor's key around Yuma's neck. Yuma took the pendent in his hand, looking at it.
"Yeah, my dad found it and gave it to me. It's the source of my Kattobing!!"
Yuya looked puzzled at his new room-mate. "Katto-waaaaah??"
"Kattobing!! It means to never give up, no matter what the challenge! It's something my dad believed a lot in, so I wear this pendent as I feel I can kattobing through anything with it!"
Yuya smiled as he put the framed picture back down on the desk. He wasn't sure about this 'kattobing' or whatever it was, but Yuma sure seemed fond of the pendent and in fact all of his parents stuff. "So are your parents out there exploring somewhere now."
"Er..." there seemed to be a pause before Yuma replied. "...oh, yeah, they're always out there going to new places and such."
"Oh? That must be really exciting!"
With that, Yuya made his way over to the bunkbeds and after jumping up on the treasure chest to get to the ladder, he climbed up onto the top bunk.
"Hey, since you have all this stuff here, you don't mind if I put something up, do you?"
"Hey! Go ahead!"
Yuya quickly pulled out a rolled up poster from his bag and unravelled it. He placed the poster on the wall beside the top bunk, revealing it to be a poster of a man dressed in an outfit similar to a circus ringmaster, holding a trophy in his hand and holding it above his head.
"Hey! Who's that?" Yuma asked, curiously.
"It's my dad." Yuya replied. "He was a pro-duelist who discovered and developed action and entertainment dueling!"
"Huh? "Was" a pro-duelist? Does he not do that anymore?"
"Er...!" This time it was Yuya's turn for an awkward pause. Yuma looked at Yuya curiously while the boy was silent, then all of a sudden the younger boy just burst out laughing which seemed a little forced and out of place.
"Hahaha! Oh er... don't worry about that! It's not important!!"
Yuma wondered what the out of place laughing was all about, but decided not to dwell on it.
"Oh, well, I'm looking forward to seeing what action duels are like and that pendulum summoning thing you mentioned too!!"
Yuya turned around and smiled at his room-mate.
"I'm looking forward to showing them both to everyone here, and the more I get action duels noticed, the more I can get my dad's dueling style out there and noticed!"
Yuya looked back up at the poster of his dad. This really was the start of a new beginning and he was going to do everything he could to get action duels and entertainment dueling noticed by as many people as he could outside of Miami City while he was here.
