[Story] A Tale of Two Protags (Part 2)

Synopsis: Yuya learns that you don't mess around when it comes to Chronos. Yuma almost gets expelled for flunking his second year.

It had been just under three weeks since Yuya had moved from Miami City to Duel Academy island in order to be ready to start his first year there in October when the new semester arrived. Although he was not officially a student yet, the principle had let him to sit in on a few classes, just to get a feel for what they would be like, but somehow... Yuya had thought they would be a bit more exciting.
He was sat in one of Chronos' lectures on one of the desks at the front. He yawned and rested his head on his hand. Maybe it was just Chronos' teaching style, but he felt beyond bored.

Mid-way through the lesson, one of the school's aides entered the classroom from a side-door and approached Chronos. She apologized for the intrusion, then talked to Chronos, lowering her voice to a inaudible whisper to the rest of the room. Afterwards, Chronos looked up at the students before him.

"There is a matter I need to attend to, I will be back very shortly na no nae!"

With that, he left the room with the school aide.
Yuya looked around at the other students. They looked just as bored as he did. Then his eyes lit up. He's an entertainment duelist after all, he could probably entertain the room while Chronos was gone. With that, the boy jumped over the desk and walked to the podium at the front of the room.

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! I have been enlisted to entertain you during this surprise interval!" He then pulled a face, to something he thought would resemble Chronos. "-na no naeee~!"

The students laughed and the more Yuya continued joking and mocking Chronos, the more the laughter continued. This was a LOT more fun than the boring class! Though eventually, the laughter dwindled into an awkward silence. Yuya stopped and looked up at them, wondering why they weren't laughing anymore, in fact, they looked incredibly on edge.
It was then that a familiar booming voice came from behind him.

"SIGNOR YUYA SAKAKI!!"

Frozen with fear, Yuya gradually turned his head around to find Chronos stood directly behind him looking down at him with anger.

"...I'm in trouble."

Yuya soon found himself stood in Principal Samejima's office, which is where Chronos had sent him with a note stating why he'd been sent. Samejima looked at the note Yuya had given him, then looked up at the boy.

"Disturbing class...?"

Yuya rubbed the back of his head awkwardly.

"Er, yeah. I decided to entertain the class while Chronos-sensei was absent and got too carried away..."

Samejima sighed and placed the note down.

"You must remember that a classroom is not one of your entertainment duels, Yuya-kun." He then gave him a smile. "Try to keep the entertainment on the duel field next time."

Feeling relief that it seemed like he wasn't in a huge amount of trouble, Yuya smiled back.

"I promise it won't happen again."

Samejima seemed happy with Yuya's answer and was about to tell him that he could leave when there was a knock at the office door.

"Come in."

The doors slid open and Yuma entered.

"Hey, someone told me you wanted to see me-" Yuma then spotted Yuya in the room and greeted him. "Hey, Yuya!!"

Yuya greeted him back as Samejima addressed the older boy.

"Ah, yes. I need to speak to you about your finals results." He turned to Yuya. "You may leave."

"Nah, it's okay, he can stay!!" Yuma replied enthusiastically before turning towards Yuya. "We'll walk back to the dorms together after this!"

Yuya looked over at Samejima, wondering if it was okay for him to stay. Samejima looked at the two boys and responded. "If you are sure." He then reached under his desk and pulled out a brown file. He looked over at Yuma, with a sudden serious expression on his face which neither of the boys were expecting.

"Now, Yuma-kun...we have received the results from your finals."

"You have...?" Yuma smiled awkwardly all of a sudden. "...d-did you pull me in here to say I did well??"

Yuya frowned a little, he could tell even Yuma didn't believe the words he just said.

"Sadly no." Samejima replied, as he opened up the file. "... where your dueling results have improved a little, your written results are much worst than they were last year."

Yuma's face fell and he looked slowly at the floor. He seemed to know what was coming.

"Yuma-kun. You do remember what we told you when we allowed you into this academy? That you had to prove yourself to us that you would take the work here seriously or you would no longer have a place here. That arrangement still stood for the second year.
I know you were tutored last year, but did you not seek out help at all this year?
With these results, we cannot allow you to pass your second year."

Yuma's head snapped up at the last sentence, looking at Samejima is disbelief. The feeling of a lump in his throat formed as he tried to process the situation.
"Y-You mean I'm out...?"
Samejima chose not to respond, allowing Yuma the time to process everything.

"I-I can do better! I know I was an idiot this year, I should of tried harder! And I'll try harder, I promise I'll try harder if I can stay!"

Samejima still did not speak as Yuma tried to find more words to convince him not to expel him there on the spot, but he couldn't think of anything. Since getting Hope, he had concentrated so much on dueling and learning the ropes of Xyz summoning that he completely neglected most of his other studies. But it was not like help wasn't there for him. Even though Ruka was no longer at the school, there were other students he could of asked for help, but he didn't.
Yuma quietly turned his head to the floor, tears forming in his eyes. If he'd failed at this school, what hope did he have to become a duel champion.

Yuya glanced at his new friend with a solemn look on his face. It felt a little odd seeing Yuma, who was always so energetic, optimistic and full of passion, look so distraught. There had to be something he could do to help.
Clenching his fist, he took a step forward and looked over at Samejima.

"I know I'm not really in the best position to take part in this but... even in the short time I've known Yuma, I can tell that he takes dueling seriously. I know if you gave him another chance, he'll stick to his promise."

Yuma looked up at Yuya, surprised that the boy he'd only known for the last few weeks was defending him so much, especially in a situation that seemed almost hopeless.
Yuya looked back at him and smiled confidently.

"You said you don't give up, right?"

Yuma paused and then he returned Yuya's smile with a nod as he took hold of the Emperor's key hanging around his neck. "Ah!"

Taking a deep breath, Yuma looked over at Samejima, stepping forward with a renewed confident spirit.

"Principal Samejima. I know I didn't do my best this year, but if you give me another chance, I promise I'll work as hard as I can to bring my grades up. I give that promise as a student and as a duelist."

Samejima remained silent as he looked between the two boys. Somehow, they both reminded him of Juudai. He was not the most model student, far from it, but he certainly was a confident and talented duelist. He also admired how much of a bond the two boys had built in a little under three weeks of knowing each other.
Smiling, he decided to give them his answer.

"Very well. You get another chance, but only one more."

Yuma's face lit up as he threw one arm around Yuya in an almost headlock and throwing the other arm into the air in celebration.

"But-" The two boys stopped and glanced over at Samejima. "-I cannot except you into the third year with these results, so you will have to repeat your second year again."

Yuma calmed down at this, removing his arm from Yuya. Although he felt dissapointed that he couldn't move onto his third year, he understood why he couldn't and gave Samejima a nod in agreement.

"As well as this, I will also assign another student to tutor you twice a week when the new semester begins." Samejima then rubbed his chin in throught, before turning to Yuya. "Yuya-kun. Are there any subjects you struggle in, by any chance?"

"Me...?" Yuya pointed to himself, puzzled at why the principal would ask him such a question. "Er, well, I guess I'm not so good with science and math."

"Then I will assign the same student tutor to you."

"EH!?! But I haven't even failed anything!"

Samejima gave him a cheerful grin. "But you want to support Yuma-kun, right? Besides, think of this as a reminder to try and not entertain the classes you are in."

Yuya gave out a defeated sigh. Guess he had no choice but to accept it.

-----------------------------------

After the two boys had left Samejima's office, they started walking through the corridors of the school together, heading for the exit of the school.

"Hey, Yuya, thanks for sticking up for me back there. Sorry that you kinda got dragged into it though"

Yuya looked over at Yuma and smiled at him. "It's okay, I'm just glad they gave you another chance."

"Yeah and this time I'm totally going to Kattobing!!"

With renweed enthusiasm, Yuma suddenly began running down the corridor.

"O-oi Yuma! Wait up!"

Yuya followed his friend as they both ran towards the exit of the academy and into the bright sun of the outside.
